How to Stop Fidgeting

Though harmless in nature, the act of fidgeting is often considered as a sign of nervousness. Here, we provides a few ways to get rid of this habit.
Fidgeting is defined as the act of moving about restlessly. People with this habit find it hard to sit still. They can be seen making involuntary gestures such as swinging their legs, biting their nails, twirling the hair, cracking the knuckles, and playing with objects such as rings.
It must be noted that these individuals perform these acts unconsciously; however, the observers are under an impression that such individuals are bored, distracted, or nervous. This type of behavior must be avoided, especially in social situations such as interviews, meetings, presentations, etc.


Fidgeting is often considered to be a bad habit. Since children are full of energy, they often move their arms and legs in a swinging motion. Making them sit at one place may seem to be a Herculean task. Parents and teachers often think that the child is behaving in such a way to get attention, and try to discipline such children.
Well, that might not always be true. In fact, some of the children might actually be affected by attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Such involuntary gestures could also be associated with an individual's state of mind.
Sometimes, people might find themselves in jobs or situations that don't offer any growth or challenge.
Their restlessness might be attributed to boredom. Sometimes, this unconscious act might be linked to certain medical conditions. Individuals affected by psychological disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, delirium, or dementia might also move about restlessly.

Treatment Options

The only way to stop fidgeting is to be conscious about your body language. If a child is hyperactive and seems very restless, make sure that his/her talent is realized. You must check if he/she is paying attention and comprehending the lessons at school. Sometimes, children use certain gestures to communicate.
According to psychologists, certain hand movements help them to communicate their ideas. If the child is not distracted and is using gestures just to communicate, you must not stop him/her. Providing a great learning environment at schools and home, can certainly make a difference.
Parents also need to make sure that the child is not overburdened with problems at home. Conflicts at home can alter their personality and have an adverse effect on their confidence.
Adults who are always anxious and nervous, can try out relaxation techniques in order to calm themselves. Yoga and meditation can help tackle the nervous energy that manifests in the form of such gestures. If you have been going through a tough time, go for counseling sessions. Individuals affected by such disorders must also seek medical attention.
Fidgeting is not always a symptom of childhood disorders; however, a child psychologist should be consulted in case of children who display abnormal behavior. Since children may even seem restless and fiddle with things due to boredom, make sure that such children are allowed to participate in brain-stimulating activities.
